United youth team going for record in FA Youth Cup

With a record 19th league title already in the bag, it could be the turn of Manchester United’s youth team to secure a place in the history books on Monday.

United host Sheffield United in the FA Youth Cup final second leg at Old Trafford knowing victory, after last week’s first-leg draw, will allow them to become the first club to win England’s most prestigious under-18s tournament on 10 occasions.

Coach Paul McGuinness has guided his team through a tough set of fixtures, recording victories over West Ham, Liverpool and Chelsea.

But they found the Blades a tough proposition at Bramall Lane and McGuinness will be keen to ensure United do not get ahead of themselves, as Sir Alex Ferguson noted after the visitors had twice gone in front.

"We have a very good youth team," said Ferguson.

"At Sheffield United last week, they were outstanding for the first half-hour.

"But one or two started to showboat a little bit. They began to run with the ball and lost their rhythm.

"The second half turned out to be a really interesting game.

"It was end-to-end and Sheffield United played a great part in it by putting on a really good show."

Although the Blades will be backed by a large travelling support, expected to exceed 5,000, it would be a major surprise if a team including promising French midfielder Paul Pogba, exciting but troubled talent Ravel Morrison and newly-crowned academy player of the year Ryan Tunnicliffe were not able to secure victory.
