Reserves Champions

United clinched the Northern Group A reserves' title with the point they required as Warren Joyce's side played out a goalless draw with Arsenal.

Darren Fletcher made his comeback from a virus while the Gunners included long-term injury victim Thomas Vermaelen in their side in front of the watching Sir Alex Ferguson.

It was a largely tepid affair but James Shea made an outstanding late save to deny substitute Will Keane a late winner. The Gunners dominated possession for the first half hour but failed to trouble Ben Amos, who was a virtual spectator. It took United 20 minutes to register an attempt as Oliver Norwood's raking drive cleared the bar by some distance after a Bebe cross was only partially cleared.

Some crunching tackles by the Brown brothers, Wes and Reece, seemed to spark the hosts into life and Shea was lucky to stay on the pitch after clattering into Gabriel Obertan when Daniel Boateng's misplaced header looked set to give the Frenchman a clear run for a tap-in. Referee Steve Martin awarded play on and Obertan almost ensured justice was done seconds later when beating Boateng on the left, only to shoot against Shea, who deflected the ball to safety.

For all Arsenal's pretty football, lone striker Jeremie Aliadiere's biggest contribution of the first half was to pick up a yellow card for a blatant dive in the box under Joe Dudgeon's fair challenge. However, United also lacked a cutting edge without a centre-forward on the pitch despite Obertan's impressive running in attack. The ex-Bordeaux forward set up Norwood for a shot that looped off the returning Vermaelen and into the arms of Shea before firing across the face of goal following another dash down the left flank.

Fletcher was withdrawn at the break with his replacement, Ryan Tunnicliffe, making an immediate impression. The young midfielder was quickly involved and had a shot at Shea following a Dudgeon cross from the left.

Shea spilled the ball when Oliver Gill lunged at a Norwood free-kick but the big defender was back to his usual job when making a strong challenge to deny Rhys Murphy inside the Reds' area.

Amos was finally worked by a fizzing drive from Oguzhan Ozyakup and the keeper was fortunate to escape a trip on Aliadiere when the Frenchman was wrongly flagged offside when latching onto a poor Scott Wootton backpass.

Instead, United were so close to making it six wins on the trot when Norwood swung over a cross and Keane's powerful header was superbly diverted onto the bar by Shea's right-hand. It couldn't alter the fact that the Reds will meet Blackburn in the play-offs after clinching top spot in the table.

United: Amos; W.Brown, Dudgeon, Wootton, Gill; R.Brown, Fletcher (Tunnicliffe 46), Norwood; Bebe (Vermijl 50), Obertan, Brady (Keane 72). Subs not used: Devlin, Petrucci

Well done to the young lads, they've had a great season. Many worried that Ole leaving and Eikrem would have an unsettling effect. Great comfort in the quality of youth at the club hopefully see them making enrodes into the first team soon. Morrison has some skills, just hope he keeps his head straight- he has worked very hard this second half of the season and has been rewaded for it- new contract heading his way.

Great news, and it's a good sign if these young players make it into the first team.

Although I must say, we must be the only team to have spent 10 million odd pounds on signings for our reserve team! (Bebe and Obertan ), so we really should have won it.
